Tell me about Acupuncture
Acupuncture, or meridian therapy, is the practice of employing needles, cold lasers, electrical stimulation, localized pressure, and other methods to rebalance 'chi' or 'qi', the vital energy of life. Chi travels in the body along predictable pathways called meridians. These 12 meridians are unique and travel in different paths from nerves, blood vessels, or lymphatic vessels. It is when the flow if chi along these meridians gets blocked or becomes stagnant that sickness and bodily dysfunction takes place. The use of acupuncture allows for the restoration of normal chi flow that then brings abou the return to good health
Although the practice of acupuncture has been around in China for well over two thousand years (some scholars site dates well past four thousand years), its popularity in the United States is a much more recent phenomenon. Perhaps the most famous historical introduction of acupuncture to the United State was in 1972 during President Nixon’s trip to China. While over there covering the story for the New York times, journalist James Reston was stuck ill with acute appendicitis. While undergoing surgery, acupuncture was used as the anaesthetic.

Acupuncture Q & A
Q: Does Acupuncture hurt?
A: Most people associate acupuncture needles with the needles used in hypodermic injections. The disposable needles we use are so fine that you could easily fit four of them inside the tip of a hypodermic needle. Most patients might equate it to a "mosquito bite"
Q: Does Acupuncture work if I don't believe in it?
A: Having a positive attitude toward life is a benefit to everyone; however, acupuncture has been used in double blind studies to successfully treat a number of conditions. In addition, many veterinarians now use acupuncture to treat animal hip and joint problems. You don't have to be a believer, but getting results and feeling better will make you one!
Q: What conditions can acupuncture help with?
A: Chronic pain, migraines, tension, cluster and sinus headaches, jaw pain, Bell's palsy, bladder dysfunction, bed wetting, neck pain, mid-back pain, tennis elbow, post operative pain, gastric problems, asthma, allergies, skin conditions, abnormal blood pressure, fatigue, anxiety, neuological syndroms, nicotine addictions, and weight disorders, among others
Acupuncture Case Studies
Jennifer had come into my office at the young age of fifteen, just a freshman in high school. She had been diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis and was suffering with joint pain that rated 8 out of 10. Jennifer could barely walk and because of the pain she could no longer go out with her friends. The Rheumatologist put her on a standard drug care of Prednisone, Methotrexate, and Diclofenac, but her symptoms were not improved.

After six months of no improvement, Jennifer and her family came to our office. Following the second acupuncture treatment, Jennifer’s pain was down at 3 out of 10. After the seventh visit her pain was almost completely gone, except for a small area around her ankle. As we extended the time in between visits to once a month, Jennifer found that she was able to get completely off her medications and her activity levels increased tremendously. When I last talked to Jennifer she said that she could do anything that anybody else could do, and that only when packed tightly into a car filled with friends did she notice anything.

‘Alex’ had been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Irritable Bowel Syndrome almost seven years prior. She suffered from crippling pain in her hands and feet and severe migraine headaches were a daily occurrence. She had tremendous muscle pain and required at least twelve hours of sleep a day, sometimes more. Her hormones were so out of balanced that she was constantly having hot flashes. Eventually, the terrible pain and fatigue forced Alex to quit her job and live off her husband’s income and their savings.

By the time she had arrived at our office, she had already seen a gauntlet of doctors and specialists. They then prescribed powerful pain medication as the solution to her problem, but the expensive and intellect robbing effects of the medications created a host of other problems that complicated her life even further. Increasingly bedridden and still in pain Alex admitted to me that she had lost the will to live.

She told me that she didn’t know much about acupuncture but was willing to try anything to feel better. She agreed to treatment and we performed an electro meridian examination. This initial examination gave us an excellent indicator of where her body’s energy was as it traveled through the twelve main meridians. During the next four visits we started to correct the severe imbalances of the energetic meridians in her body.

At the start of the second visit she admitted to feeling somewhat better and that her energy levels had improved, she had even forgotten to take her pain medication. After the next several visits the headaches disappeared and the tremendous suffering in her hands and feet lessened.

Soon after that ‘Alex’ decided to go on a vacation to visit her family in Maryland, something she had wanted to do for so long but hadn’t felt good enough to try. She returned to her Rheumatologist and he was unable to find any tenderness or hot spots on her back at all. She even managed to get completely off the injectable medications that were ruining her life. ‘Alex’ came back a few more times over the following months, whenever she felt the beginnings of discomfort and pain, but she is now free of the terrible pain that was ruling her life.

Maybe you are like ‘Alex’ or know someone like her, someone that can benefit from the work we do. Give us a call at 669-5433.
